Sarah Montgomery - Switched Connections
26 x 17cm box
Etching, mixed media on paper, housed with acrylic in a re-purposed electrical switch box. (This artwork can be re-assembled and traditionally framed on request)
As a printmaker I am always on the hunt for materials and resources to use for my image-making. Up-cycling for this show, I used a recently removed steel switch box complete with copper wires. The switch box was a good fit to house my copperplate etchings, tiny magnets secure the paper works to the inside and outside of the structure. Installations allow you to make different creative decisions, re-thinking how someone would walk around the 3D work in the gallery. Would a visitor notice the shadow lines cast by the wire, hit by the afternoon sun onto the inside wall of the box. Would they see the reflection of the tannin stained leaf onto the surface of acrylic like water? Maybe some visitors will see the images selected for the work connect the element of copper, a metal that naturally occurs in rocks, soil and water.
